Personality at the country level: The Big Five, culture and international competitiveness

Dave Bartram Chief Psychologist for SHL Group Ltd. Prof Bartram will talk about personality data considered at the level of countries rather than individuals. He will summarise some large international studies using OPQ32i and OPQ32r data which show very strong correlations between the Big Five and Hofstedes cultural dimensions, measures of global competitiveness and other country-level performance measures. The analyses show that while relatively small amounts of variance (around 7%) are accounted for by differences between countries this between-country variance is very stable across samples and strongly related to other criteria, indicating that country differences in personality reflect real differences and are not due to bias or test adaptation effects.
